(CLAIR) – For The Need Executive Director, Dorina Timbol, and Board Chair, Tammy Jordan, led a diversity class for teenagers at the recent Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program in Ojai, California. RYLA is one of the 5240 Rotary Districts’ impactful youth programs that empowers young leaders to understand their role in society and provides them with the tools to lead.
196 high school leaders from Kern County, San Luis Obispo County, Santa Barbara County, and Ventura County participated in the four-day program, which focused on leadership training and personal growth. The aim of RYLA is to provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders, encourage leadership of youth by youth, encourage youth to make a difference in their communities through volunteer work and social responsibility, and demonstrate Rotary’s respect and concern for youth.
RYLA is an all-expenses-paid camp for young people chosen for their leadership potential. Rotary clubs and districts select participants and facilitate the event’s curriculum. RYLA was officially adopted by Rotary International in 1971 and is one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service. RYLA programs often lead to the formation or strengthening of Rotaract and Interact clubs, and RYLA participants often go on to become Youth Exchange students or Ambassadorial Scholars.
